Menstrual blood, a promising ally for faster diagnosis of endometriosis
Endometriosis is a common condition that can be debilitating. It is difficult to establish an effective diagnosis. A research team from Inserm, the Institut Pasteur, Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University and the Centre Léon Bérard studied menstrual blood as a potential source of biomarkers for endometriosis for diagnostic purposes. Their findings identified a promising set of biomarkers associated with differences in the expression of certain genes. They also showed that the epithelial cells found in the menstrual blood of individuals with endometriosis are the cell type with the most pronounced differences compared to those of individuals not suffering from the condition. This preliminary research, published in BMC Medicine, paves the way for novel, faster, non-invasive tools for diagnosing endometriosis.
