As part of a new European network around infectious diseases, the Institut Pasteur hosted colleagues from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Helmholtz Centre for Infection research (HZI), Wellcome Sanger institute, Gulbekian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) and Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) for the 2nd international 'Amplifying Funds in Infection Biology’ symposium. From Sept 30 to Oct 2, over 90 participants from all partnering institutes joined Institut Pasteur researchers to share their latest results on topics spanning the entire breadth of infectious diseases: from viruses, the microbiome to parasites, and from cryoCLEM, the latest AI-assisted data analyses workflows to new tools for pandemic surveillance. A poster session highlighted in particular the work from junior fellows that benefited from EMBL-Pasteur seed and travel grants.

The meeting made clear that a path forward to excellent research across Europe requires tighter bonds between research institutes and bringing together colleagues across disciplines around a common theme. Over the last two years, the 'Amplifying Funds’ achieved this by providing opportunities for complementary research teams focusing on infectious diseases, creating truly new synergies. As the network aims to widen its scope across the partnering institutes to also tackle the latest challenges in microbiome and AI research in the near future, we are already looking forward to the 3rd international ‘Amplifying Funds in Infection Biology’ in Paris in 2028.
