Upcoming Education Webinar on September 14: "Ebola Bundibugyo: lessons and realities from the field"– now accessible to non-French speakers thanks to real-time AI-powered subtitles
The Department of Education, in collaboration with the Institut Pasteur Alumni Association (AAEIP) and the Francophone University Agency (AUF) – Western Europe, is pleased to invite you to the first Education Webinar of the 2026-2027 academic year, on the topic "Ebola Bundibugyo: lessons and realities from the field," on September 14 at 2pm via Zoom. New this year: Webinars on French-language education are now accessible to non-French-speaking audiences thanks to real-time AI-powered subtitles in English and 35 other languages.
The webinar will be an opportunity to hear from three colleagues who worked in the field in the Democratic Republic of the Congo this summer as part of the response to the Ebola Bundibugyo epidemic, which has already killed 2,500 people since it was declared in May 2026:
Simon Bessis, an infectious disease physician at Hospices Civils de Lyon and a scientist in the Biology of Viral Emerging Infections Unit, was sent to the field by Médecins Sans Frontières and helped treat patients at several Ebola treatment centers in North Kivu and Ituri.
Jules Villa, a postdoctoral fellow in the Anthropology and Ecology of Disease Emergence Unit and a member of the Institut Pasteur's Outbreak Investigation Task Force, joined WHO's community engagement teams for eight weeks in Ituri.
Flavio Finger, an epidemiologist and scientist at Épicentre/Médecins Sans Frontières specializing in major epidemics, was sent to North Kivu at the start of the outbreak to monitor the evolution of the epidemic and identify priorities for action. He supported Médecins Sans Frontières and the health authorities in introducing a surveillance system in the city of Butembo.
We would encourage you to attend the webinar to hear from these three colleagues and learn more about the complementary nature of the three approaches – clinical, anthropological and epidemiological –, all of which are needed to tackle an epidemic effectively.
The webinar will be held in French and subtitled in real time in English or 35 other languages (using artificial intelligence).
