Long considered a virus circulating only in low-resource countries, data from the past 15 years have shown that infection with the hepatitis E virus (HEV) occurs worldwide.

The virus is transmitted via the fecal–oral route and zoonotically, as it is the only hepatotropic virus with a broad animal reservoir. It is highly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries with limited access to essential water supply services, but it is also a major public health issue in industrialized countries, particularly among immunocompromised individuals.

This webinar will explore:

  • The genetic diversity and epidemiology of HEV
  • Pathogenesis according to populations and genotypes
  • Clinical and therapeutic challenges
  • Prevention of infection

Florence Abravanel is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Health of Toulouse and Hospital Practitioner in the Virology Laboratory of Toulouse University Hospital. Sébastien Lhomme is Professor at the Faculty of Health of Toulouse and Hospital Practitioner in the Virology Laboratory of Toulouse University Hospital. After completing their pharmacy studies, they obtained their PhDs in science on hepatotropic viruses (hepatitis C and E viruses) at the University of Toulouse under the supervision of Professor Jacques Izopet. They serve as Deputy Directors of the National Reference Center for Hepatitis E Virus, which monitors HEV in France and studies the pathophysiological aspects of infection, particularly the mechanisms underlying viral persistence in immunocompromised patients.

This webinar will be held in French on Tuesday, March 10, from 2pm to 3:30 pm, via Zoom videoconference (45-minute presentation + 30-minute Q&A).
