Publication of the 134th issue of the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur": "Influenza: an ever-present threat

The latest issue of the quarterly newsletter for Institut Pasteur donors – the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur" (LIP) – contains a special report on influenza.

Flu is often taken lightly, yet it can be a formidable adversary. In France, it affects between two and six million people every year, flooding hospitals and claiming thousands of lives, especially among vulnerable populations. The elusive influenza virus does not just circulate among humans; it also has a vast animal reservoir, contributing to its diversity. Interactions between humans and animals could result in a virus capable of bypassing our immune defenses and triggering a pandemic. The Institut Pasteur's teams combine high-precision epidemiological surveillance with state-of-the-art research on viral evolution, positioning them on the front line in the response to any unpredictable influenza outbreaks, whether seasonal epidemics or global health threats.
